About Floats

Merton Floats is the drama society of Merton College, Oxford. Reputedly the oldest college drama society in Europe (possibly an apocryphal factoid!), its origins certainly go back to the 1930s when it was established as an alternative to OUDS by Giles Playfair.

Today Floats is entirely run by students of Merton as an organisation separate from Merton JCR. Our main activity is providing funding to Oxford productions, particularly those with Mertonian involvement. We also put on at least one Floats production a year - recently these have been Macbeth and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, both in Merton College Gardens. As well as funding and producing drama we try to offer support and advice to Mertonians interested in getting involved in drama and act as a point of contact between the JCR and OUDS.
